SOMETIMES YOU JUST NEED TO START

I left NYC on July 31, 2010 on my single speed bike with my laptop and a few belongings in my messenger bag. On that day I rode from Brooklyn, up to the George Washington Bridge, then down to Rutherford, NJ, some 27 miles or so.
There was a time of planning, researching, and asking questions, but then my lease was ending and I had a job I could do remotely, so I just got rid of all my stuff and hit the road. I did this for about two years before heading home when my mom got sick.

There’s a point when it’s just time to move forward and do the damn thing, even if you don’t know if it’ll work out. For me, during that time, it was biking from one friends house to another. Then I posted metal trivia questions on social media until 2018. I finally started something called Heavy Metal Email in 2021 and then renamed it to Social Media Escape Club in 2023 and hosting weekly Zoom calls.

The point is that things reveal themselves when you start, when the wheels are in motion. There are things you can prepare for, sure, but some things you just have to figure out in the moment.
